Urn Description
If you are interested in an urn you will find what I have available under the SHOP button.
There are some important things to consider when making an urn selection. Probably the most important is the urn’s capacity/size. The size need will depend on the weight of the person or pet prior to cremation and whether or not you want all the ashes to be placed in the urn (ashes are frequently distributed among family members and sometimes a portion is separated for scattering). The guideline most used is that the weight in pounds equates to cubic inch need (for example: a person weighing 160 pounds would generate 160 cubic inches of ashes and the urn would need a capacity for that amount). An urn with a capacity of over 215 cubic inches will usually be sufficient for anyone at or over 215 pounds. The urns I create are always listed with their capacity.
I always recommend that you take the urn to a funeral home and let them place the ashes into the urn. They will likely place them into a plastic bag and the bag will be sealed and labeled with an identifier that matches the cremation records.
If you are distributing ashes among family members then you may want more than one urn. The smaller capacity urns for this type of distribution are called Keepsake urns. They will usually have a capacity of 50 cubic inches or less and are sometimes combined with larger capacity urns.
Any urn that I make will always have a lid. Most of the time the lid will thread on. If the style and wood characteristics are not suitable for threading then the lid can be left to lift off or can be sealed with a silicone adhesive after the placement of ashes. Remember that if you let the funeral home place the ashes in the urn they will use a plastic bag and the bag will be sealed. It becomes your choice if you want the lid permanently adhered. If you do it is best to let the funeral home apply the adhesive.
The urns I create are meant for display in the home. I like an urn to have a shape and look that does not always conform to what you usually find. That is because I believe you will most appreciate an urn that reflects the love you have for the person or pet that has passed and seems to celebrate their life, rather than appear too somber.
